It's not simple, but it works May 08, 2026
In my previous note: No one ever thinks about the bookmarks, I complained that there is no simple way to sync my bookmarks across all my devices without selling my soul to Firefox, Google, or Apple.
This remains true.
The most convenient thing in the world is to create a Firefox account and hit the sync button. But like many things on the internet, we are offered convenience at the expense of privacy.
I am aware that a collection of bookmarks is not —digitally speaking— the most precious thing in the world to me.
The point is to apply the same philosophy I apply to my photos, videos, contacts, etc. I would like to own all that information, not delegate it to a company just to save the extra effort of taking charge of my own belongings.
The phrase “You will own nothing and be happy” sums it all up.

These past few days I’ve been setting up my own Nextcloud server; I’m very excited about all the possibilities I’ve unlocked *evil face.
But back to the topic: Nextcloud has a plugin for saving bookmarks that I can sync with a Firefox plugin. Now I can take my bookmarks to any instance of any browser I want.
It’s not a simple solution by any means, but it works wonderfully.
For fun, I’m leaving a slightly more complete diagram of this solution.
